Getting Started
Getting Started
NWS is primarily a youth organisation where anyone from the age of 9 to 23 can join, adults of youth paddlers are also welcome. All levels of experience and all abilities are welcome. Contact the lead coach Jonathan Davies to get more information about session timings, kit hire, and any other inquiries.
North Wales Slalom has a multitude of kit such as boats of different classes and sizes, paddles, helmets, buoyancy aids, spray decks, and dry cags, all available to borrow, so you can get started straight away. See our terms for borrowing kit below.
As well as this you'll need some layers such as a swimsuit or wetsuit, and more layers for the colder months. You may want to get pogeys (gloves), dry trousers, or a warmup jacket for added warmth.
Waterways Licence and Insurance
To get on most inland waterways in the UK you'll need a Waterways Licence. You can get this mostly easily by joining Paddle Cymru as an 'On the Water Member' (non-paddling members can also join as a bankside member to get the Public Liability Insurance too) You can find out about this here: https://www.paddlecymru.org.uk/save-up-to--100-on-waterways-licence
